Seventeen East Midlands primary schools have united to form an innovative teaching school alliance specialising in leadership and teacher training for urban schools.
The L.E.A.D. Urban Teaching School Alliance, led by the Huntingdon Teaching School in St Ann’s Nottingham, aims to be a beacon of excellence and specialist expertise in developing leadership and teaching for schools serving urban communities. Diana Owen, Chief Executive of the L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, said that the alliance would address the distinct opportunities and challenges shared by urban schools. Through collaborative working, the alliance schools will identify, train and share outstanding teaching and leadership skills.
“Working in schools is exhilarating and rewarding, but requires a very special set of skills and attributes to help children thrive, aspire, believe in themselves and achieve. We have a huge amount of experience across the alliance and we want to harness, nurture and share this between schools.”
Ms Owen continued, “Our training programmes will focus on developing the characteristics needed to lead and teach in urban schools.”
The L.E.A.D. Urban Teaching School Alliance is working with the University of Nottingham’s School of Education, to create bespoke training and development programmes with a strong urban focus for trainee teachers. Professor Christine Hall, Head of the School of Education at the University of Nottingham said, ‘As a university, we’re delighted to be part of the local partnerships which exist to make sure that teachers are well trained and go on getting better at their jobs. The schools in the L.E.A.D. alliance share our commitment to making sure that children in the region’s schools get the best possible education and we’re excited about the prospect of working closely together.’
Carol Norman, Headteacher of Welbeck Primary School, an outstanding school in the Meadows area of the City and a National Leader of Education, commented, “It is important not to become isolated working in schools with high level of demands. We all have many strengths and areas of expertise which need to be shared. The alliance will help us define and share best practice ensuring all schools achieve success. That has to be a good thing for all our children. Identifying, supporting and nurturing our own expert talent across the alliance will create a very strong cohort of future leaders and teachers capable of raising aspirations, standards and achievement across our schools.”
