Whilst working with a theatre company during university, I had the opportunity to work with young people with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). This experience was incredibly rewarding and opened my eyes to the impact meaningful support can have on a young person’s development.
Following this, I gained further experience as a teaching assistant in both primary and secondary schools. I really enjoyed working with young people — particularly in helping them overcome barriers to learning and supporting them in achieving positive outcomes.
My own school experience also played a significant role in inspiring me. The relationships I had with my teachers made a lasting impression on me, and I hope to create the same supportive and encouraging environment for the students I teach.
What I enjoy most about teaching at Hogarth Academy is being part of the school community. There’s a strong sense of collaboration amongst the staff — we work closely together, share advice and ideas, and support one another. Also, the children themselves are what make our school so special. They are enthusiastic, resilient, and hardworking. Our children are empowered to use their voice and take the lead through opportunities around school such as school council and the job shop. It is really rewarding to see students develop both academically and personally.
I hope to empower pupils to believe in themselves and to celebrate their strengths and interests. I want to foster a genuine love for learning that stays with them as they grow. I aim to create a classroom where curiosity is encouraged, creativity is celebrated, and every child feels safe to take risks, ask questions, and explore new ideas. I hope that I can be an important part of a school community that shapes confident, resilient, and thoughtful learners who are well-prepared for the wider world.
Teaching is a really rewarding profession. My advice would be to go into it knowing that every day is filled with new challenges and new successes that make the job worthwhile. You can have a powerful, positive impact on a child’s life — and that really is something to be proud of.
Remember to make the most of the support around you — your colleagues are a valuable source of experience, guidance, and encouragement. Teaching is very much a team effort, and asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. Support one another, stay open to learning, and celebrate the small successes!
