Jamie Bailey, Teacher

Every day, teachers across our academies inspire, support and guide the next generation.

Year 6 Teacher Jamie Bailey reflects on what inspired him to become a teacher and what it’s like teaching at Uplands Junior L.E.A.D. Academy in Leicester.

My inspiration to pursue a career in teaching stems from the positive experiences I had with teachers throughout my own education. I can still vividly recall individuals from both primary and secondary school who made a lasting impact — not only academically, but also in terms of my confidence, motivation and personal growth.

I was especially drawn to primary education because of the opportunity to serve as a strong male role model in a field that is predominantly female. I hoped to reflect and pass on some of the values and inspiration that my teachers instilled in me.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Uplands Junior L.E.A.D. Academy?

I have been at this school, and with this year group, for the past three years, completing my NQT years with the academy.  One of the aspects I enjoy most is the spontaneous nature of teaching. It’s incredibly rewarding when pupils become so engaged that they take the learning in exciting and unexpected directions.

I also value the opportunity to make a real and immediate difference. Seeing children tackle challenges, overcome obstacles, and grow into the best versions of themselves — and knowing that my efforts contribute to that — is a deeply fulfilling experience that brings daily rewards.

What impact do you hope to make on your pupils every day?

Above all, I hope to ensure that each child comes into school with a smile and feels safe, supported, and included. I aim to foster an environment where every pupil feels heard and encouraged to be independent.

My goal is to ignite a curiosity about the world, a passion for learning, and a belief in their own potential to grow — not just academically, but as individuals with the power to make a positive impact.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of becoming a teacher?

My advice would be to take the time to explore all the pathways available. I initially considered a career in secondary PE, but through various experiences, conversations with educators, and careful reflection, I found my passion in primary teaching.

I’d also encourage those who may not have direct experience in the classroom but who feel passionate and driven to still pursue the profession. I hadn’t volunteered in a primary setting or worked as a teaching assistant prior to training, but I brought a range of transferable skills and a strong desire to succeed. With support from colleagues and pupils alike, I’ve been able to grow into the teacher I am today — with a commitment to continuing that growth throughout my career.
