Former students return as teachers to Derby school

Noel-Baker Academy in Alvaston, Derby welcomed back two of its former students, Sophie Oxtoby and Alex Baines, who have returned to the school as dedicated teachers.

Sophie and Alex, who graduated in 2018 and remained best friends, have rekindled their passion for education at their alma mater. After university, both Sophie and Alex were given opportunities to develop their teaching skills at Noel-Baker. Alex initially joined the school’s SENDco team for work experience, and Sophie joined part-time as a Teaching Assistant with the inclusion team before completing the Teach First programme with the school.

Sophie now teaches History and Humanities, while Alex is a Geography teacher. Both attribute their decision to become teachers to their connections with Noel-Baker Academy and their desire to give back to the local area. Their experiences as students and familiarity with the community have provided them with unique insights, making it easier to connect with their students.

The two teachers noted that the school has undergone a significant transformation since their days as students, now being part of the L.E.A.D. Academy Trust family. The school’s commitment to a better curriculum and fostering a genuine belief that every child wants to learn has been central to its success. This transformation has made Noel-Baker an even more attractive place to teach, reinforcing its role as a pillar of the local community.

Both teachers are keen to build strong relationships with their students, building upon the valuable skills they learned during their work experience to foster a positive environment at the school.

Kate Richardson, Headteacher at Noel-Baker Academy, said:

“It is truly inspiring to see Sophie and Alex return to Noel-Baker Academy as teachers. Their dedication and passion for education are evident, and they are already making a significant impact. We are committed to continuing the legacy of school improvement and fostering a positive learning environment for all our students.”

Sophie Oxtoby, History Teacher at Noel-Baker Academy said:

“Returning to Noel-Baker Academy feels like coming home. The support I received from the staff during my time here inspired me to pursue teaching. There is a strong sense of community here – the staff are collaborative, and everyone feels like they are listened to. Every staff member cares deeply about their students and has confidence in their learning abilities.”

Alex Baines, Geography Teacher at Noel-Baker Academy added:

My experience with the SENDco team during my work experience showed me the impact dedicated teachers can have on students’ lives. I am thrilled to be back at Noel-Baker, teaching Geography, and contributing to the school’s ongoing transformation. I can see myself teaching here for my whole career and would love to become a Head of Department one day.”
