New chapter for Witham St Hugh’s Academy

Witham St Hugh’s Academy, based on Warren Lane and part of L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, has kicked off the spring term by celebrating the appointment of Sam Coy as its new Headteacher.

Sam brings 18 years of experience in education to his new role, including more than a decade in senior leadership roles across primary schools and multi-academy trusts. He takes up the post following a career spanning headship, executive leadership and roles focused on school improvement, inclusion and leadership development.

He began his career teaching across Newark and Lincoln, including at Bishop Alexander Academy, which is also part of L.E.A.D. Academy Trust. At the age of 27, he was appointed Headteacher of Benjamin Adlard Primary School in Lincolnshire, where he led the school from ‘Special Measures’ to ‘Good’ within one year. The school went on to be named UK Primary School of the Year at the Pearson National Teaching Awards in 2018.

Sam has since held a range of senior positions in the sector including Executive Headteacher, Associate Education Director, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Quality Assurance and Standards. Across these roles, he has supported schools nationally, led trust-wide improvement strategies and strengthened provision for vulnerable pupils.

At Witham St Hugh’s Academy, his initial focus will be on building strong relationships across the school community.

“I am really proud to be joining Witham St Hugh’s Academy, and am genuinely excited about the opportunity to return to lead a school in my home county.

“My long-term vision is to ensure the school is a place where every child feels seen, valued and capable of achieving remarkable things. Witham St Hugh’s is a powerful part of its community and already has a strong culture and clear values. I am excited to work with the community to build on those strengths while ensuring the very best outcomes for every pupil.”

Helen Tunney, Director of Primary Schools at L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, said:

“Sam brings a strong combination of extensive headship experience, system leadership and a deep commitment to inclusion and pastoral care. We are delighted to welcome him to Witham St Hugh’s Academy.

“The school already has a solid foundation, and Sam’s focus on strong leadership, high expectations and inclusion will ensure that standards remain strong and continue to develop for the benefit of pupils, staff and families.”
