Emma Thorne, Headteacher at Sycamore Academy

Every day, leaders across our academies inspire, support and empower colleagues to provide the very best education for pupils.

Headteacher Emma Thorne reflects on her leadership journey across L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, what has shaped her career, and what it’s like leading Sycamore Academy in Nottingham.

I am currently in my second headship within L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, leading Sycamore Academy. My journey within the Trust has been both rewarding and transformative, shaped by a strong commitment to improving outcomes for children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Leading schools in challenging contexts has reinforced my moral compass and strengthened my belief that education can genuinely change the direction of a child’s life.

Where did your journey within the Trust begin, and what was your first role?

I began my career within the Trust at St Ann’s Well Academy, joining as a SENDCo and part-time teacher. This role gave me a solid foundation in understanding the diverse needs of pupils and the importance of inclusive, high-quality teaching, and it was here that my passion for leadership began to develop.

What key steps or opportunities helped you progress into your current leadership role?

Several key opportunities supported my progression into leadership. Whilst working as a SENDCo I completed a postgraduate qualification as a Dyslexia Specialist, before undertaking the NPQML prior to becoming Assistant Headteacher. I later completed the NPQH before stepping into headship. From Assistant Headteacher I progressed to Head of School at St Ann’s Well, where I was supported for a year by an experienced headteacher within the Trust. That mentorship was instrumental in preparing me for full headship. I went on to lead St Ann’s Well as Headteacher for ten years before supporting Sycamore Academy, where I was appointed substantive Headteacher in September 2026. Alongside the qualifications and roles, being willing to embrace new challenges and step forward when opportunities arose was equally important in shaping the leader I am today.

How has working within the academy supported your professional development and growth?

Working within the Trust has significantly supported my professional development at every stage. The culture of collaboration, strong mentorship and access to high-quality training has enabled me to grow consistently throughout my career. The Trust has always provided both challenge and support, encouraging me to step outside my comfort zone while ensuring I had the guidance needed to succeed. Opportunities to work across different academies have also broadened my perspective and strengthened my leadership practice considerably.

What has been the most rewarding part of your journey so far?

Reflecting on my journey, I am most proud of the impact I have had on improving the life chances of children, particularly those from some of the most deprived communities. My leadership has always been strongly driven by a moral purpose, a belief that every child deserves an excellent education regardless of their starting point. Seeing tangible improvements in pupils’ outcomes, confidence and aspirations has been the most powerful measure of success, and knowing that the work we do can change futures and open doors for pupils is what continues to drive me every day.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to progress into a leadership role within the Trust?

For anyone looking to progress into a leadership role within the Trust, my advice would be simply to go for it. Be open to challenge, take opportunities when they arise and do not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The Trust provides a strong balance of challenge and support which helps you grow as a leader. Most importantly, stay grounded in your purpose, in why you do the job, because that will guide you through both the opportunities and the challenges that leadership brings.
